Aeropuerto T-4 station
Opened on 3 May 2007 as the terminus of Line 8, the station was built at the same time as the civil works for Terminal T4 at Barajas, which was planned from the outset as an interchange between the metro and Cercanías, Renfe’s commuter-rail network. The extension was preceded by a political row between the Comunidad de Madrid and the Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Fomento) over which administration should build it and, at bottom, who should pay for it. The regional government turned to private finance: it put the works out to tender in February 2006, awarded the contract in April and handed construction and operation of the section to a twenty-year concession.
That model is the origin of the special supplement paid by passengers with a single metro ticket; travel pass holders are not affected. So that all four terminals are on an equal footing, the supplement is also charged at Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3. The Cercanías station, on line C-1, opened later, on 22 September 2011, and for Renfe’s own tickets it is in zone B2: it is the only metro station whose fare zone differs from that of the Cercanías station it connects with.

Frequently asked questions
Because the extension of Line 8 to the T4 was financed with private capital: its construction and operation were awarded to a concession for twenty years, with a supplement on the single ticket. To put passengers at every terminal on an equal footing, it is also charged at Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3. With a travel pass you do not pay it.
The Cercanías (commuter-rail) station, on line C-1, opened on 22 September 2011, four years after the metro station. For Renfe’s own tickets it is in zone B2, which makes it the only metro station in a different fare zone from the Cercanías station it connects with.
