Madrid Metro Line 11
Seven stations between Plaza Elíptica and La Fortuna, in Leganés: a short Carabanchel line with a change to the circular line.
About Line 11
With seven stations, Line 11 is the shortest on the metro, not counting the Ramal. It works as a local line for the Carabanchel district: from Plaza ElípticaES it calls at Abrantes, Pan Bendito, San Francisco, Carabanchel AltoES and La Peseta, and only its southern terminus, La Fortuna, lies outside Madrid, in Leganés.
Its only interchange with another metro line is at Plaza Elíptica, with Line 6. There, and at Abrantes, Pan Bendito and La Fortuna, it also connects with intercity buses. All its stations are in zone A except La Fortuna, which is in B1. An end-to-end trip takes about 15 minutes.
Length: the sum of the distances between consecutive stations published by the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM) in its open data (network routes, updated on 29 May 2026), in one direction and counting every section of the line. It measures from the first station to the last, without the track that continues beyond the termini, so other published figures for the length of the line may be higher. Neither Metro de Madrid nor the CRTM publishes an official length for each line.

History
It opened on 16 November 1998 with three stations — Plaza Elíptica, Abrantes and Pan Bendito — and was the first new line in almost 20 years. Because demand was low, in 2000 metal platform extensions were fitted so that narrow-profile trains could use it, and these ran until 2010.
In 2006 it closed for a few days to raise the overhead line voltage to 1,500 volts, and on 18 December the first extension opened, with San Francisco, Carabanchel Alto and La Peseta: 2.7 km of tunnel dug by the boring machine Excavolina, at a cost of €172 million. The three stations have larger ticket halls and lifts than those of 1998; Carabanchel Alto keeps a classic entrance because it sits in the historic centre of the neighbourhood.
The extension to La Fortuna, in Leganés, was built between 2007 and 2010 and opened on 5 October 2010. Its tunnel continues under the M-40 ring road to the Cuatro Vientos depot, but a station with a connection to Line 10 was never built there. To the north, the tunnel boring machine for the extension to Conde de Casal set off on 26 March 2026 and on 28 September continued from Madrid Río towards Atocha.
Hours and frequency
On weekdays there is a train every 5.5 to 6.5 minutes between 7:00 and 9:30, and every 7 minutes for the rest of the day until 22:00. The first trains, from 6:05, run every 6.5 to 10.5 minutes Monday to Friday and every 7 to 9 at weekends. After that, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the interval is 7.5 minutes for most of the day. From midnight it widens to 15 minutes, every day of the week.
The trains
The line has no fleet of its own and has received surplus trains from other lines: the 5000 series from 1998 to 2000, the 2000 series during its narrow-profile period, the 3000 series from 18 December 2006, and the 2nd batch of the 8000 series, ordered partly for this line, from December 2010. Since 15 January 2025 9700-series units transferred from MetroEste have been running, and since then only three-car 9000-series trains.
Frequently asked questions
Because La FortunaES is in the municipality of Leganés, outside Madrid, and falls in zone B1. The rest of the line is in zone A. The station, which opened on 5 October 2010, serves around 15,000 residents.
Work is under way on the extension from Plaza Elíptica to Conde de Casal, with two new stations, Comillas and Madrid Río, and three interchange stations: Palos de la Frontera, Atocha and Conde de Casal. The tunnel boring machine reached Madrid Río on 10 June 2026 and on 28 September set off again towards Atocha.
The tunnel of the La Fortuna extension continues under the M-40 ring road to the Cuatro Vientos depot and ends very close to the Line 10 station, but the Line 11 station at Cuatro Vientos was never built.
