When it opened on 14 June 1999 it was simply called Aeropuerto, and it was inaugurated by the King and Queen of Spain together with the president of the Comunidad de Madrid. Its construction, like that of part of Line 8, was paid for with European Union cohesion funds. It was a terminus for only a few months: that ended on 7 September 1999, when the missing section of the first phase of the line opened.

The current name arrived on 3 May 2007, with the extension to Aeropuerto T-4. Despite the change, the signs at the Line 8 stations still show the old name as the terminus. Although the station is in fare zone A, since the line reached the T4 the special supplement is also charged here to passengers travelling on a single ticket, so that travellers at all four terminals are on an equal footing. It has a single ticket hall, close to Terminal 2, with two lifts.

The airport supplementEntering or leaving Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 or Aeropuerto T-4 costs a €3.00 supplement on top of the zone A Metro single ticket, the Combinado single ticket, the 10-trip Metrobús ticket, or the 10-trip Combinado ticket. You do not pay it with a 30-day travel pass that includes zone A, an annual pass, or the tourist travel pass (Abono Turístico). A zone A single ticket costs between €1.50 and €2.00 depending on the number of stations, so a single journey from the airport to the centre comes to about €5.00 in all. The EMT Exprés Aeropuerto bus costs €5.00. More on the metro to the airport page.
