Sol was on the very first section of all three lines that cross it. The Line 1 platforms opened in 1919 with the inaugural Sol-Cuatro Caminos section; those of Line 2 followed in 1924, above Line 1 and at right angles to it, and those of Line 3 in 1936, at roughly the same level as Line 1. In the sixties the Line 1 platforms were lengthened from 60 to 90 m, but the foundations of the buildings above made it impossible to extend them side by side: one grew northwards and the other southwards, and they ended up offset. Between 2004 and 2006 the Line 3 platforms were lengthened too, and the Preciados entrance opened.

The entrance pavilion is the work of Antonio Fernández Alba, and inside the highlight is a large central hall with a decorated ceiling, shops and a police station. The Cercanías station, dug out as a cavern beneath a very high vault, opened on 27 June 2009; its construction was halted for six months in 2006 by archaeological finds. In 2012 the station was called “Estación Sol Galaxy Note” for a month, and from 1 June 2013 to 1 June 2016 it was “Vodafone Sol”, thanks to a €3 million sponsorship deal. The last lift, to platform 2 of Line 1, opened in November 2016 and made the station fully accessible.

Frequently asked questions

In the sixties they were lengthened from 60 to 90 m, but the two could not both be extended in the same direction because that would have put the foundations of the buildings above at risk. One was extended northwards and the other southwards, so they ended up offset from each other.

Because of a sponsorship deal: between 1 June 2013 and 1 June 2016 the station was known as “Vodafone Sol”. The company paid €3 million, one million a year. Earlier, in March 2012, it had already spent a month as “Estación Sol Galaxy Note”.
