It has existed since 4 February 1961 as the terminus of Line 1, less than 5 m below ground, where Calle de Bravo Murillo opens onto the square. Francisco Franco presided over the opening, with Carmen Polo and several ministers; the auxiliary bishop blessed the new section in front of a temporary altar set up on a platform. It remained the Line 1 terminus until 2007 and became one again in 2016, from 3 July to 14 September, during works on the line as far as Sierra de Guadalupe.

In the ’80s deeper platforms were built for today’s Line 10 (then Line 8), which opened on 10 June 1982, and for Line 9, opened on 3 June 1983, together with a shopping passage and a ticket hall next to the Canal de Isabel II. From 2004, when the underground bus interchange was built, until 2009 the station was refurbished: lifts were installed, one of them a funicular-type lift, walls and vaults were renewed, and the shops were removed from the interchange passage to widen it. In August 2021 it was the Line 9 terminus during works on the section to Colombia.
