This Line 1 station, between Estación del Arte and Menéndez PelayoES, is in the Arganzuela district, next to the Atocha railway stations. It is underground and has two ticket halls.

The Alfonso XII ticket hall groups the entrances on Paseo de la Infanta Isabel, one of them on the corner of Calle de Alfonso XII, together with a lift and a passage towards Renfe. The Renfe ticket hall links directly with the Cercanías commuter-rail station. The operator lists connections here with Cercanías, the main-line railway station and the Exprés Aeropuerto airport express bus.

The station opened on 27 July 1988, when the Atocha rail complex gained its new metro stations and the Atocha-Cercanías station, as part of the Plan de Cercanías. The neighbouring stop, now Estación del Arte, was called Atocha from 1921 until 1 December 2018, when it was renamed to avoid confusion with the railway station, which is in fact closer to this stop. The expansion of the complex designed by Rafael Moneo brings together the Madrid-Puerta de Atocha terminal building, the Cercanías interchange and this metro station.
